Nicki Minaj was scheduled to perform at Hot 97’s Summer Jam in New York last night. However, things turned left when Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg made a few remarks referencing Nicki Minaj. Rosenberg stated:
“I see the real Hip-Hop heads sprinkled in here. I see them. I know there are some chicks here waiting to sing ‘Starships’ later, I’m not talking to y’all right now. Fuck that bullshit. I’m here to talk about real Hip-Hop shit. People here to see A$AP Rocky today. People here to see ScHoolboy Q on this stage. That’s the shit I represent.”
Subsequently, Nicki Minaj wasn’t having the disrespect and pulled out as Summer Jam’s headlining act after Lil Wayne canceled her performance.
Shortly after, Funkmaster Flex jumped on the Rosenberg bandwagon and declared that he would no longer support commercial artists like Nicki Minaj.
Obviously, Peter Rosenberg has a serious problem with Nicki Minaj. Almost like a scorned lover who is mad at their ex’s success. However, the Summer Jam wasn’t the forum to express his dislike for her, especially when there were people there who were excited to see Nicki perform.
On another note, while I can understand wanting a variety of rap played on the radio besides the “commercial” stuff, there is a place for it all. Both Rosenberg and Funkmaster Flex need to understand their position–they are both DJs for a major radio station that caters to playing “commercial rap.” If they aren’t feeling it, then it sounds like they need to take themselves elsewhere.
Brandon Soderberg best summed up my thoughts on the whole matter in his recent post, “Nicki Minaj vs. Peter Rosenberg: The Worst Beef Ever.” Go check it out here.
In a turn of events, Nicki is scheduled to appear Flex’s show tonight. It will be interesting to see how this goes.
